Pregnancy Travel: Safe Trips, Flying Tips & Babymoon Ideas
Travelling while pregnant does not have to be stressful, in fact, it can be one of the most memorable times to explore, relax, and make special memories before baby arrives. As a fellow UK mum who has been through it, I have pulled together my best tips for pregnancy travel, from flying comfortably to planning the perfect babymoon.
Is It Safe to Travel While Pregnant?
In most cases, yes. Travelling while pregnant is safe if you plan carefully and check in with your midwife or GP before you go. Your stage of pregnancy, destination, and method of travel will all play a role in what is right for you.
The second trimester is often the sweet spot. Morning sickness has usually eased, energy levels are higher, and you are not yet in the “waddle everywhere” stage. That said, I know mums who happily took short UK breaks right up until 36 weeks (with a doctor’s note in hand).
Flying When Pregnant
Air travel while pregnant can be perfectly safe and surprisingly comfortable with the right preparation. Short-haul flights are easiest, but long-haul can work too with extra planning.
My top three flying tips:
- Book an aisle seat so you can stretch and nip to the loo without disturbing anyone.
- Wear compression socks to help circulation and reduce swelling.
- Stay hydrated because cabin air is very dry and can make you feel more tired.
I have written a full guide with airline policies, seating strategies, and in-flight comfort hacks. Read my Flying When Pregnant Tips for all the details.
Babymoon Ideas
A babymoon is a wonderful way to celebrate your pregnancy, connect with your partner, and enjoy a little “us” time before baby makes three. It can be as simple as a cosy UK countryside retreat or as adventurous as a sun-soaked escape within safe travel guidelines.
In my Babymoon Ideas Pregnancy post, I share destination inspiration, the best times to go, and how to choose somewhere that feels indulgent but still pregnancy-friendly.
Staying Comfortable on the Go
Whether you are on a train to Cornwall or a flight to Spain, comfort is key when you are travelling with a bump. Loose, breathable clothing, supportive shoes, and a good travel pillow can make all the difference.
I also keep a small self-care kit in my bag. My personal hero products? The All Purpose Wonder Balm, perfect for soothing dry skin, sore nipples, or even a chapped nose from recycled plane air, and the Pregnancy-Safe Shower Gel for a refreshing, gentle wash at the hotel without worrying about harsh ingredients.
Packing Essentials for Pregnancy Travel
- Medical notes and your maternity exemption card.
- Healthy snacks such as nuts, oat bars, dried fruit.
- Reusable water bottle to stay hydrated.
- Comfortable layers because planes and trains can be unpredictable temperature-wise.
- Self-care items like the Wonder Balm and Pregnancy-Safe Shower Gel.
Pregnancy Travel FAQs
Can you travel in the third trimester?
Yes, for most women with low-risk pregnancies, but check your transport provider’s policy. Many airlines require a doctor’s note after 28 weeks.
Do I need travel insurance?
Absolutely. Make sure it specifically covers pregnancy-related care and complications.
What is the best time for a babymoon?
Most mums-to-be prefer the second trimester. You are usually feeling your best and can enjoy travel without the heaviness of late pregnancy.
